Among the many springs in Alta Valtellina, the ferruginous ones hold a special place, as several veins of these springs are distributed throughout the region. These waters are characterized by their high iron content, visible by the rust-red color they leave on the stones in the streams. In centuries past, they were highly recommended as therapeutic treatments, believed to be effective for venous and circulatory disorders, rheumatism, skin diseases, and particularly for women, against anemia and other distinctly female ailments.

The so-called “aqua forta” of Piatta is located on the path leading to the area known as Pramiòl (likely meaning “Prato di Moiolo,” a locality recorded since 1676). Though less famous than the renowned springs of S. Caterina, it was not uncommon to encounter tourists drinking from its ferruginous waters. To facilitate access, steps were built next to the basin, allowing containers to be dipped into the water. However, in the 1950s, the basin was destroyed, leaving only a single stream that still flows today.

While the current spring does not present any bacteriological contamination, it is not potable due to the presence of limonite, a chemical derivative produced by the deposition of ferruginous sources.
