Bugl del Cò de Sóra – Fountain with Washhouse | Loc. Oga (ENG)

It was built in 1894 by the residents of the “upper district” or “Capo di Sopra” (Cò de Sòra), which was distinguished from the inhabitants of Cò de Sòt, with the dividing line determined by the closer proximity of the residents to one of the two fountains. The construction material is granite, and the work was entrusted to Girolamo Camadini, a stonemason from Grosotto, under specific terms and conditions that stipulated:

– The origin of the stone (Ruina Mùf, a place where the mughi trees fall or are felled, located just above the village on the slope between the Calosio bridge and the Rasiga bridge);

– The cooperation obligations of the neighbors (building a roof for rainy days, helping to turn over large boulders, creating a work yard…);

– The dimensions of the stone (5 meters in length);

– The dimensions of the basins (1.15 meters in width, 0.55 meters in height each);

– The internal excavation of each basin (0.95 meters in width, 0.45 meters in height);

– The total capacity of the basins (4.60 cubic meters for 1966 liters of water).

The agreed payment was 250 Italian lire. Water sources were such a valuable asset that they were strictly regulated and monitored by specific inspectors called aguadri, water masters who oversaw the irrigation channels and the rotational distribution of water. Later, the term was also used to refer to forest rangers (aquadro de boschi). Their presence is also documented in Oga: in 1659, the aguadri received ½ a jug of wine while they were in the forest on duty, and in 1660, they were reimbursed 4 lire by the local community.

Besides the two mentioned fountains, there is a granite basin dated 1891 at the Oga parish house, probably also used for water supply and now utilized as a flower bed.
